A huge thanks to everyone who attended September’s Book Club on Jane Jacob’s Death and Life of Great American Cities. If you were unable to make the lively, almost two-hour discussion, never fear! We’re excited to return in October to discuss City Limits: Walking Portland’s Boundary. Written by local author and teacher Dr. David Oates, the book documents Oates’s interactions during his intermittent but multi-year trek to cover all 260 miles of Portland’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB).
The UGB was first developed in the 1970s alongside other land-use plans for Oregon. Since then, through careful planning by Metro, the regional government for Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties, the boundary has shifted to accommodate the growing population of the metropolitan area. More information on the UGB and land-use plans for Portland can be found on Metro’s website.
During October’s meeting, Dr. Oates will join us in-person to share his thoughts on his walks and kayak trips. Also, since City Limits was published in 2006, we will cover the current state of the UGB and the impact of Measures 37 and 49. Copies of City Limits are available at Ampersand (www.ampersandvintage.com) or the Waypost (www.thewaypost.com) at a 20% discount.
