Billy Frank Jr. Conference Center—2nd Floor—Ecotrust Building—721 NW 9th Avenue

Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission has been presenting the creative works of regional talents and outside visitors to our place throughout its 20+ year existence. This evening’s potpourri is designed to provide an update on current OCHC projects of interest to the greater Portland and Ecotrust  communities.

Dorothea Lange in the Pacific Northwestan audio-visual chronicle
Iconic western photographer Dorothea Lange took photos for the FDR-created Farm Security Administration from 1936-1939, including her famous Migrant Mother image in 1936. In the summer and fall of 1939, Lange received her last FSA assignment, to document farmers, farm workers, rural communities and FSA initiatives throughout the Pacific Northwest. OCHC produced the first exhibition of Lange’s Oregon FSA photos at PSU. The show just opened in its 3rd venue at Washington Historical Museum on PCC’s Rock Creek campus from June 10-Sept 11.

For this Ecotrust evening OCHC will present a visual tour of Lange’s imagery across our landscape and words from her 1939 field notes describing locations, individuals, and agriculture throughout the rural Northwest.

Finding David Douglas—a brief excerpt
Botanist David Douglas was assigned to work through the Hudson Bay Company in the Pacific Northwest on two extended visits in the 1820s and ’30s. While here he travelled extensively through the region, and ultimately brought into the world’s botanical treasure house more than 200 species of lasting significance. Oregon’s state tree, the Douglas fir, is so named in his honor. OCHC is completing an hour-long documentary on the David Douglas legacy. A short selection will be shown as an introduction to the project.

Dill Pickle Club—an introduction
New to the Portland scene, the Dill Pickle Club has come out of the gates with a bang. Learn here of the Club’s exciting upcoming tours and events and how you can participate. OCHC is working with the Picklers as the group obtains tax-exempt, non-profit status.
