Where Food Comes From

Last week’s outing to local food suppliers may have been the best Dill Pickles event yet. Despite a crazy start (I got two flats before even getting to our meeting spot!), the group rode all the way out to Milwaukee, where we got to a behind-the-scenes look at Bob’s Red Mill and Nature Bake. It was great to meet both Bob (who played a ragtime song or two for us on piano…in the factory!) and our tour guide of Nature Bake, Dave “Killer Bread” Dahl (pictured with hair-netted group above). After a quick stop at Brentwood Community Gardens (where 2 of the City of Portland’s 3 employees who run the community gardens program spoke with us), our ragtag group of 40 riders triumphantly arrived at Widmer Brewery, where we were treated to free booze samples and a lecture on local food policy by Steve Cohen, from the City of Portland’s Office of Sustainability. All told, we learned a lot about food in Portland, put some 25+ miles on our bikes and even met some new friends.

Read a great and in-depth review of the ride, courtesy Neighborhood Notes, here. If you have photos or video, please upload your pics to our Flickr group pool. Finally, two nice little videos, courtesy Mrs. Lucy Rockwell and Ken Aaron.
